Over the years, the property changed hands, moving from one heir to another. And as often happens with historic family homes in Italy, what belongs to everyone ends up belonging to no one. The house was neglected — unloved, unrenovated, and slowly fading.
A Love Story, Not a Business Decision.
But among all, there was one who never stopped loving it.
A woman who treated it as something sacred, who returned every summer to keep it alive with care and simple acts of maintenance.
Her name was Grazia. She was my mother.
She — and my father Costantino — eventually decided to buy the house from the other heirs. At that time, the property was in desperate need of restoration. There was only one bathroom, and it was outside. Yet this wasn’t just a real estate purchase. It was an act of love. A way to honour a place and its story.
The Birth of a Bed and Breakfast
In 2001, the house was transformed. The structure was fully renovated, but with great respect for its original soul. Rather than hiding the past, it was revealed — celebrated.
That’s how Antico Borgo Sanda was born: a boutique bed and breakfast on Lago Maggiore where authentic Italian hospitality meets the charm of a timeless home.
Today, i carry it forward. I’m Andrea, Grazia’s son. I haven’t just inherited the keys to this house — I’ve inherited its spirit. And a clear vision of what it should be.
